IELTS Speaking Part 1: Common Questions & Sample Answers

7 min read · Updated 10 June 2026

The most common Part 1 question topics with band-9 model answers, and a repeatable structure to answer anything the examiner throws at you.

Part 1 is the warm-up: 4–5 minutes of questions about familiar, personal topics. It feels easy, which is exactly why candidates underperform here — they give one-word answers or ramble. The goal is short, natural answers of 2–3 sentences that show a little vocabulary range.

A simple structure for any Part 1 answer

Use Answer → Reason → Example. Answer the question directly, add a reason, then a quick example or detail. This keeps you from both under-answering and over-talking.

Common Part 1 topics and sample answers

Work & study

Q: Do you work or are you a student?

I'm currently working as a junior accountant at a logistics company. I joined about a year ago, mainly because I've always enjoyed working with numbers and spotting patterns in data.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

Probably the variety, honestly. No two days are the same — one morning I'm reconciling invoices and the next I'm helping plan a budget, so I never really get bored.

Hometown

Q: Where is your hometown?

I'm from Samarkand, a fairly old city in eastern Uzbekistan. It's famous for its architecture, so it's always full of tourists, which gives it a lively atmosphere.

Hobbies & free time

Q: What do you usually do in your free time?

I'm quite into hiking these days. There are some great trails just outside the city, and getting out into nature is the best way for me to switch off after a busy week.

Food

Q: Do you prefer eating at home or eating out?

It depends on my mood, but generally I prefer eating at home. I find cooking quite relaxing, and it's a lot healthier than constantly ordering takeaway.

Common Part 1 mistakes to avoid

  • One-word answers ('Yes, I do.') — always add a reason.
  • Memorised speeches — examiners spot rehearsed answers instantly and they sound unnatural.
  • Over-long answers — Part 1 is not the place for a two-minute monologue; save that for Part 2.
  • Repeating the question word-for-word to buy time — use a short natural opener instead.

Practise with a timer or an AI examiner so you get used to the rhythm: the examiner asks roughly 12 questions in 4–5 minutes, so each answer is only about 20 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

How long should IELTS Speaking Part 1 answers be?+

Around 2–3 sentences, or roughly 20 seconds each. Answer the question, give a reason, and add a short example. One-word answers score low and over-long answers waste time.

What topics come up in IELTS Speaking Part 1?+

Familiar personal topics such as work or study, your hometown, hobbies, food, daily routine, weather, and technology. You won't be asked about complex or abstract subjects until Part 3.

Can I prepare answers for Part 1 in advance?+

You can prepare vocabulary and ideas for common topics, but avoid memorising full answers word-for-word. Examiners are trained to detect rehearsed responses, which can lower your fluency score.
